I have started reading a lot of Urdu work on the Internet lately, and am rather impressed by the number of blogs as well as the amount of Urdu poetry available on the Internet. I am a huge fan of poetry and Ghazals, perhaps the greatest contribution of the Persians to Indian literature.
It is surprising how easy Windows makes it to work in the language you like. Thanks to the almost pervasive adoption of Unicode on the Internet, it is now possible to create a truly multilingual web for the masses. In Microsoft Windows, there are options to install additional fonts and keyboard layouts for almost any modern day language. Office makes it easy to work on a multilingual document and then simply export it as a Unicode based web page instantly. In the case of complex languages like Hindi/Urdu, all you need to do is install a phonetic keyboard layout, and you can type as fast as in the English language!
I am very interested in using the web to spread literacy, and this kind of integrated technology is a very good way to develop applications for the less fortunate. Who knows, I might actually start a new blog in the Urdu language very soon !
