Just read on the Inquirer that the final release of Windows Vista would use HDCP to curtail viewing of protected digital media on devices without DRM.
This comes as a surprise as Microsoft is going to be the first company to actually use this technology. HDCP enabled monitors are still pretty rare, and of course, expensive.
It seems to me that just like graphical UIs were the focus of OS development in the last decade, this decade is going to be about focus on implementing effective DRM measures in operating systems. Blame the Internet !
You can read more about the HDCP standards at Wikipedia.
Time will tell how these measures are accepted by the general Windows user who just invested a bunch of dollars on that new widescreen flat panel display. Interestingly, Robert Cringely of PBS fame has an insightful article on what could have made Apple go for Intel chips because of their in-built DRM measures.
We are seeing a quantum evolution of operating systems.
